Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has discussed the surprise inclusion of Erick Mathoho when they faced Sudan and highlighted that the national team is not his club.
Bafana edged the Falcons of Jediane 1-0 in their second round 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon, after going down 2-0 to Ghana in Cape Coast three days earlier.
The quick turnaround between the two fixtures naturally resulted in a number of changes, with these ultimately having proven beneficial for coach Molefi Ntseki.
One particular change saw Mathoho slot in alongside Hlatshwayo to replace the skipper’s Bidvest Wits defensive partner Buhle Mkhwanazi, which in fact resulted in a clean sheet.
‘Tyson’ explained what it was like having the Kaizer Chiefs defender as a partner, while revealing that the reason for his club teammate being dropped was not actually explained.
“For sure, everyone is important in the team. Whether I’m playing or not, or Buhle is not around; Thami is not around, as long as [the team does well],” said Hlatshwayo.
“It’s a country, it’s not a football club like Bidvest Wits, but we’re happy for 'Tower' to have come in, even though the coach didn’t really explain why he took Buhle out.
“But, like I said, it’s a country and everyone put their hands up [to get a place in the team].”
